Preparing the grid

A new daily puzzle every day — find every hidden word to win

What is the Squares word game

Connect the letters, spell every hidden word

Squares is a single-player daily word game. You trace a path through touching letters on a 4×4 grid — across, down, or diagonally, never reusing a square — to spell words of four letters or more. Each puzzle hides a fixed list of common words; find them all to finish, scoring a point for every letter. It is quick to learn and different every day.

A new puzzle daily
One 4×4 grid is generated for every calendar day, the same for everyone. Your progress saves as you go, so you can put it down and finish later.
Plays in your browser
No download, no install, no plugins. squaresgame.app loads today’s puzzle the moment the page opens, on desktop and mobile.
Bonus words and hints
Rare words you spot along the way are saved as bonus finds. Three hints per puzzle light up where an unfound word begins when you get stuck.
Progress saved locally
Your streak, completed puzzles, best time, and total words found are stored on your device — never on a server, no account needed.

How to play

How to play Squares

Squares is a hunt for every hidden word in a small letter grid. Trace touching letters to spell a word, keep each square to one use per word, and clear the whole list.

  1. 1

    Read the grid

Every puzzle is a 4×4 grid of sixteen letters. Hidden inside it is a fixed list of common words, each four letters or longer. The word list on the side of the board shows how many words are left and how long each one is, but not what they are.

  2. 2

    Trace a word

Start on any letter and drag through touching squares — left, right, up, down, or diagonally — to spell a word. On a phone, swipe across the squares; on a desktop you can also click letter by letter or just type the word on the keyboard.

  3. 3

    One square per word

A square can be used only once in a single word, though the same square can appear in many different words. Lift your finger, press Enter, or click the last letter again to submit. Too short, not a word, or already found and the trace clears.

  4. 4

    Find them all

Each target word scores one point per letter, so longer words are worth more. Rarer words you stumble onto are saved as bonus finds — they do not score, but they count. The puzzle is complete when every target word is found.

Tips to find more words

  • Sweep every square as a starting point — a word you cannot see often becomes obvious once you begin from the right letter.
  • Once you have a word, test its neighbours: add S for a plural, ED or ING for a verb, or RE and UN on the front.
  • Short common endings unlock long words: -TION, -MENT, -NESS, -ABLE, -OUS. Look for the letters that build them.
  • The word list tells you how many letters each missing word has. If a 7-letter word is left, look for stems you can extend.
  • Diagonals are easy to miss. Deliberately look for words that zig-zag rather than only running in straight lines.
  • Double letters need two adjacent squares with the same letter — spot those pairs early and the words that use them follow.
  • Save hints for the end. The first square and direction of a short word is usually enough to crack the last few.

FAQ

The Squares word game, answered

Straight answers about the free daily Squares word game you can play online in your browser.

What is the Squares word game?

Squares is a daily word game played on a 4×4 grid of letters. You trace a path through touching squares — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — to spell words of four letters or more, without reusing a square in the same word. Every puzzle hides a fixed list of common words; finding them all completes the puzzle. It is a "connect the letters" word hunt, related to games like Boggle and Squaredle.

How do you play Squares?

Start on any letter and drag, tap, or type your way through connected squares to build a word. Each square touches the next, diagonals included, and no square repeats within one word. Submit by lifting your finger, pressing Enter, or clicking the last letter again. Valid target words score one point per letter. Keep going until the word list shows every word found.

Is Squares free to play online?

Yes. squaresgame.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls. Open the page and today’s puzzle is ready.

Is there a new puzzle every day?

Yes. A fresh daily puzzle is generated for every calendar day and is the same for every player. Your progress on the day’s puzzle is saved locally, so you can stop and pick it up later. If you want to keep playing, practice puzzles are unlimited and generate a brand-new grid each time.

Do I need to download an app or create an account?

No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your streak and stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.

What is the minimum word length?

Four letters. Three-letter words and shorter do not count, whether they are on the target list or not. Longer words are worth more because each target word scores one point per letter.

Can letters connect diagonally?

Yes. A square connects to all eight squares around it, including the four diagonals. Many words in a Squares grid only exist along a diagonal or zig-zag path, so it pays to look in every direction from each letter.

What are bonus words?

Bonus words are valid English words that appear in the grid but are not on the puzzle’s target list — usually rare, archaic, slang, or highly technical terms. Finding one is recorded as a bonus find and adds to your total words, but it does not score points and is not required to complete the puzzle.

How does scoring work?

Every target word scores one point per letter: a four-letter word is 4 points, a six-letter word is 6, and so on. Your score climbs toward the puzzle’s maximum as you find words. Bonus words score nothing. Time is tracked separately so you can chase a fast completion.

Why was my word rejected?

Common reasons: it is under four letters, the path reused a square, the letters were not actually connected, or the word is not in the game’s dictionary (which excludes proper nouns, hyphenated words, and abbreviations). If a valid-looking word is refused, check that every letter touches the next and that no square is used twice.

How do I find the last few words?

Read the length hints in the word list, then work the grid deliberately: start a trace from every square in turn, test prefixes (RE-, UN-, DE-) and suffixes (-S, -ED, -ING, -ER), and look for zig-zag and diagonal paths you skipped. If you are still stuck, spend one of your three hints to light up the start of an unfound word.

How many hints do I get?

Three per puzzle. A hint highlights the first square of an unfound target word and the next square along its path, showing you where a word begins and which way it heads without revealing the whole word. Hints do not regenerate within a puzzle, so save them for the hard finds.

Does the game save my progress?

Your progress on today’s puzzle, your current and longest streak, puzzles completed, best completion time, and total words found are all saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data looks like a fresh start.

Can I play Squares on mobile?

Yes. The layout is built for touch: swipe across the letters to trace a word and lift to submit. The grid, word list, and controls fit on one portrait screen, and starting a practice puzzle is instant with no page reload.

How does the streak work?

Completing the daily puzzle — finding every target word — extends your streak by one. Miss a day and the streak resets to zero the next time you complete a daily. Practice puzzles never affect the streak. Your longest streak is kept separately as a personal best.
