About Us

About squaresgame.app

We publish a free, modern browser version of Squares — the daily connect-the-letters word game — with a new 4×4 grid every day, bonus words, hints, and a layout that works on any screen.

Our craft

Sixteen letters. One list.

Trace the paths the grid allows, clear every hidden word. That loop is everything we design around.

What we make

A free daily word game that stays in the browser

squaresgame.app is the site behind our version of Squares. The product is a single-player word game: a 4×4 grid of letters with a hidden list of common words. Trace a path through touching squares — including diagonals, never reusing a square — to spell each word, and clear the list to finish.

We are not an app-store publisher and there is nothing to download. The game is the website. That keeps load times short, works on phones and desktops alike, and avoids an account wall. Streaks, completions, best time, and total words live in local browser storage on your device.

If you are comparing this to another word game, this page only speaks for squaresgame.app. The rules, scoring, and daily format described in our how-to-play guide and FAQ match this exact build.

Our story

From lettered dice to a daily grid

The connect-the-letters grid is one of the oldest ideas in word games. We take that idea seriously and try to get the puzzle-a-day rhythm and the friction as close to zero as we can.

  1. 01

    Letter grids

Games built on a grid of letters go back to Word Cubes in the early 1970s and Parker Brothers’ Boggle in 1972 — shake a tray of lettered dice, then race to write down every word you can trace through touching letters. The format rewards pattern spotting over vocabulary size.

  2. 02

    The daily era

The 2020s wave of browser word games made a single shared puzzle per day, finished in a few minutes and easy to talk about, the default shape of a casual word game. Squares takes that cadence and pairs it with a fixed target list so a puzzle has a clear finish line.

  3. 03

    This build

squaresgame.app is an independent, modern implementation. The grid is generated in your browser from the date — nothing is fetched — and a solver works out every common word it contains. What is new here is smooth tracing on a phone, a word list with length hints, bonus-word tracking, and quality-of-life tools like typing a word straight from the keyboard.

What we stand for

Principles behind every puzzle

Instant to start

Open the page and today’s grid is already there. No account wall, no download, no splash video — you are tracing your first word within seconds.

One honest puzzle a day

The daily grid is generated the same way for everyone. No leaderboards to grind, no energy meter, no "watch an ad for a hint". Three hints, and they are free.

Yours to keep

Your streak, completed count, best time, and total words found live on your device. We do not hold your record behind a login, because there is no login.

Free, for real

The whole game is free forever. No interstitial video ads between puzzles, no premium word list, no paywall on the practice mode.

Who it is for

Players who want a clean daily word game

squaresgame.app is a family-friendly, single-player game with no chat and no store. A poor fit if you want multiplayer or live events; a good fit if you want a quick, fair word puzzle on whatever screen is nearby.

  • Short sessions

A daily grid takes a few minutes. Squares is built for a coffee break or a phone on the couch, not a long campaign.

  • Pattern-spotting, not trivia

You do not need a huge vocabulary. The skill is seeing the paths — prefixes, suffixes, diagonals — that the letters allow.

  • Play without an account

Your record stays on the device you played on. That is a deliberate trade: instant play and real privacy, with no cloud restore.

Why this site

How squaresgame.app is different

There are plenty of letter-grid games online. This one exists to ship a single honest, fast version — a clear daily target list, useful hints, and no clutter.

  • A finish line

Instead of an open free-for-all, every puzzle has a fixed list of common words to clear. You always know how close you are and when you are done.

  • Length hints, not spoilers

The word list shows how long each missing word is without naming it, so you can reason about the grid instead of guessing blind.

  • No clutter

No auto-playing video, no fake "install our app" banners, no dark patterns around settings. The how-to-play guide and FAQ describe this exact build, not a generic write-up.

How we build

Designed for the browser you already have

The game runs entirely on the web: fast loads, swipe / tap / keyboard controls, and progress that stays local unless you clear your browser data. We use lightweight analytics to see what helps players — never to gate the game behind a profile. The puzzle on the home page is the one described on our rules pages, so search results and the live game never drift apart.

  • Play anywhere

Phone, tablet, and desktop share one board. Swipe across letters on a touchscreen, drag with a mouse, or type the word and the path follows.

  • Progress on your device

Streak, completions, best time, and total words found are stored locally. You own the continuity of your record without signing up.

  • Quiet improvement

We watch aggregate usage through Google Analytics to improve pacing and polish. Details are in our Privacy Policy — never as a sales pitch.
